Moving Day for this Blog

As you know, I’ve long since finished the 40 experiment of eating for my type.  And though I’m done with the experiment I’m not done blogging.  I hope that you will join me at http://ellenewman.com/blog and while you’re there perhaps you’ll check out the rest of the website as well.

I am honored that you were a part of my journey, thank you for the read.

Day 39 – Where we go from here

Blood Type Test

I am close to announcing my new website, which will include this blog which I will likely add to from time to time so that you can have a better idea how this way of eating affects me on a longer term basis.  I’m also going to keep blogging.  Now that I’ve started, I find that I really enjoy it, and I find that I have a lot more I’d love to talk about that doesn’t have to do with my Blood Type.  Since I’m at Healthsmith tomorrow it will likely be day 41 or day 42 that the move will officially happen.

Where do I go from here diet wise?  Well I feel really satisfied eating this way, so now comes the task of incorporating it into my lifestyle on a permanent basis.  I think the trickiest will be dinner at friend’s houses and dinner with my boyfriend’s family.  My own family is either used to me showing up with my own food, or already eats in non standard american diet kinds of ways and so won’t be thrown by me being picky.

In all honesty I’ll stray once in a while.  At first I’ll do it see how much of a difference I actually feel.  And of course for the fun of eating homemade pizza and drinking dark beer again.  And if someone is making dinner for me, especially if they aren’t used to including odd dietary requests I’ll eat light and make exceptions.  But for the folks closest in my life I’ve learned they are willing to be flexible for me too.  And for this I’m extremely grateful.

Day 36 – Never underestimate the power of a short walk.

Honestly my mind isn’t on this diet change so much anymore as all the other changes going on in my life.  I’m writing about this here because no singular change happens in isolation.  It’s impossible to say how much my diet had to do with my clear thinking and motivation to act.  But none the less my head is clear, I’m revamping my website, updating the writing to reflect what I actually do, and doing a lot of thinking about creating the kind of professional life that will continue to sustain me economically while fulfilling my creative needs.

I believe that change happens on many levels.  On a physical level, on an emotional level and mental level.  I also believe change happens on an energetic or spiritual level as well.  Making changes on a physical cellular level is a great way to impact change in all areas of your life.  Even more so if one makes these changes consciously.  As our bodies regenerate creating new cells to replace the old we can literally be creating the life we want these cells to live in.

Perhaps you think this sounds like a nice idea but you aren’t about to change your whole diet to do it.  Good.  If your primary goal is a professional shift then don’t waste energy on becoming a vegetarian before you figure out what you want to do with your life.  Very wise.  Especially if your diet is serving you the way it is.

I would, however, encourage you to get outdoors and walk.  Simple movement, simple breath.  You will be surprised how different you think of things before and after that walk.  At the very least you’re getting yourself out of your usual surroundings, letting your eyes and your mind rest on different things.  At the very most you’re letting the movement enact a cellular shift in your body and helping to infuse new cells with light and joy.

Day 34 – Already?

Part of the reason that I haven’t kept up with daily posting, besides life situations like a leaky roof which have gotten a hold of my attention is that there has been surprisingly little to report.  I continue to feel better, and this diet has become so routine, I’m rarely tempted to eat otherwise.

I have had a couple of detox headaches and felt a little tired a couple of days, symptoms which were easily relieved on my Healthsmith days.  And these headaches were nothing compared with the migraines that I’ve had.

So far, so great!

Day 28 – Quick reference guide to weight loss for your blood type

As you may have guessed by now eating for your blood type will help one loose weight.  Somewhat obviously, if one isn’t eating foods they can’t digest then the body doesn’t have to store them as fat.  And if the body isn’t dealing with foods it can’t digest then it will have the energy to start detoxing fat.  However there’s even more too it than that, since all the blood types have slightly different issues with why they gain weight.  Here’s a run down on what you can do to help yourself in this area no matter what blood type you are.  All of this information is taken from the book Eat Right 4 Your Type.  There are subtleties of course, all of which I couldn’t include here, but this is enough to give you a general idea.

Blood Type O, Foods That Encourage Weight Gain

WHEAT GLUTAN, CORN – interferes with insulin efficiency and slows metabolic rate

KIDNEY BEANS, NAVY BEANS – impair calorie utilization

LENTILS – inhibit proper nutrient metabolism

BRUSSELS SPROUTS, CAULIFLOWER, CABBAGE – inhibit thyroid hormone

MUSTARD GREENS – inhibit thyroid production

Blood Type O, Foods That Encourage Weight Loss

KELP, SEAFOOD, IODIZED SALT – contains iodine, increases thyroid hormone production

LIVER – B-vitamin source, aids efficient metabolism

RED MEAT, KALE, SPINACH, BROCCOLI – aids efficient metabolism

Blood Type A, Foods That Encourage Weight Gain

MEAT – poorly digested, stored as fat, increases digestive toxins

DAIRY FOODS – inhibit nutritional metabolism

KIDNEY BEANS, LIMA BEANS – interfere with digestive enzymes, slow metabolic rate

WHEAT (IN OVERABUNDANCE) – inhibits insulin efficiency, impairs calorie utilization

Blood Type A, Foods that Encourage Weight Loss

VEGETABLE OILS – aid efficient digestion, prevent fluid retention

SOY FOODS – aid efficient digestion, metabolize quickly

VEGETABLES – aid in metabolism, increase intestinal mobility

PINEAPPLE – increases calorie utilization, increase intestinal mobility

Blood Type B, Foods That Encourage Weight Gain

CORN – inhibits insulin efficiency, hampers metabolic rate, causes hypoglycemia

LENTILS – inhibit proper nutrient uptake, hamper metabolic efficiency, cause hypoglycemia

PEANUTS – hamper metabolic efficiency, cause hypoglycemia, inhibit liver function

SESAME SEEDS – hamper metabolic efficiency, cause hypoglycemia

BUCKWHEAT – inhibits digestion, hampers metabolic efficiency, causes hypoglycemia

WHEAT – slows the digestive and metabolic processes causes food to be stored as fat, not burned as energy.  Also inhibits insulin efficiency

Blood Type B, Foods That Encourage Weight Loss

GREEN VEGETABLES, MEAT, EGGS/ LOW FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS, LIVER – aids efficient metabolism

LICORICE TEA – counters hypoglycemia. note: tea NOT supplements.

Blood Type AB, Foods that Encourage Weight Gain

RED MEAT – poorly digested, stored as fat, toxifies intestinal tract

KIDNEY BEANS, LIMA BEANS – inhibit insulin efficiency, cause hypoglycemia, slow metabolic rate

SEEDS, BUCKWHEAT – causes hypoglycemia

CORN – inhibits insulin efficiency

WHEAT – decreases metabolism, inefficient use of calories, inhibits insulin efficiency

Blood Type AB, Foods That Encourage Weight Loss

TOFU, SEAFOOD – promotes metabolic efficiency

DAIRY, KELP – improves insulin production

GREEN VEGETABLES – improve metabolic efficiency

PINEAPPLE – aids digestion, stimulates intestinal mobility

My sore knees have come back and the puffiness returned this morning, though not to the same extremes as before the diet.  Perhaps having to do with some spicy chicken tamales I ate, or the goat cheese, or the forbidden ginger ale and whiskey I drank instead of the allowed red wine.  Technically both the cheese and the chicken are on my diet, with the exception of the peppers in the tamales which were spicy enough to give me heart burn.  Of course since I had all of these things within a 24 hour period of each other it’s hard to know which if any caused the sore joints.  Perhaps it’s toxicity, or perhaps it has nothing to do with any of this.  Though by the end of this day, I feel great and the groggy morning is a thing of the past… hardly worth mentioning except that I’m blogging my progress.

Goodnight!

Day 21 – some interesting twists and more fine tuning

One of the cool things about this blog is I’ve been able to hear about other’s experience with eating for their blood type.  I have met Type A’s who can’t digest soy, Type A’s who can’t digest any meats but goat dairy works great, and Type A’s who have no problem with meat but any dairy including goat puts them over the edge.  There are some other variables of blood type that Dr. D’Adamo talks about such as secretor or non-secreter.  However if you don’t know if you secrete or not it seems that the easiest way to determine what your diet should entail is simply paying attention to what makes you feel good, what makes you feel great, and what makes you feel, blah.

I have also found a potential solution for vegetarians with type O blood.  There’s an ayurvedic herb called Coleus forskolii that has been shown to enhance energy levels in Type O’s.  It is similar to the effects of red meat on their metabolism.  They will of course still need a lot of protein from somewhere.

As for me, if I have a little goat cheese I feel fine, if for instance I put a whole bunch of goat feta on some left over bean soup… it will be delicious but I feel puffy the next morning, but in moderation it seems fine.  I’ve eaten chicken with no noticable side effects.  But over all I’m feeling very satisfied on soy and legumes and vegetable sources of protein.  It will be easier for my family to know how to feed me though if poultry is in my diet, which is a big plus.

I think the one area I could use some improvement in is getting enough fruit.  Type A’s should have 3-4 servings per day!  I was thinking I was doing great with 2…  Well this is easily fixed.
